Prairie Village – Railroad Days

The Prairie Village, Herman & Milwaukee Railroad will host "A Day on the Prairie" on Saturday, July 20, 2024, as part of the Planes, Trains & Automobiles event two miles west of Madison, South Dakota on Hwy 34. The event includes all-day rides on a train, doodlebug, and motorcars, along with tours of the roundhouse, model train layouts, and the “Emmanuel” Chapel Car. Special activities include a presentation by Rick Mills at 2:00 PM in the Lawrence Welk Opera House and a church service on Sunday at 10:00 AM in the Chapel Car.

Rio Grande 463 – Photo Charter by Friends of Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

A mixed train photo charter featuring Locomotive 463 in the Flying Rio Grande herald will take place on August 3, 2024, departing from Antonito, CO, at 7:00 AM and returning at 6:30 PM. This event includes multiple photo runbys en route to Osier and back, with a night photo shoot from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM. A box lunch, water, and snacks are included in the fare price. Capacity is limited to 60 passengers to ensure ample photo opportunities.

Huckleberry Railroad – Railfan Weekend

The Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad Railfan Weekend, co-sponsored by Genesee County Park and Mid-Michigan Railway Historical Society, invites rail enthusiasts to explore the history of the Huckleberry Railroad. Visitors can enjoy train shop tours, historical rail interpretations, and various special weekend programs, including model train displays, a Hobo Camp, railroad shop tours, sing-alongs, and photo opportunities.

Iron Horse Rambles – Reading & Northern 2102

On Saturday, August 17, 2024, the Iron Horse Ramble will take passengers from Nesquehoning to Pittston, PA. This event features a ride behind the historic T-1 steam locomotive #2102 along the picturesque Lehigh Division. Attendees will arrive in Pittston just in time for the annual Tomato Festival, which offers great food, a spaghetti eating contest, rides, bingo, live entertainment, and the Little Mr. and Miss Tomato contests. After enjoying the festivities, passengers will return to Nesquehoning in the evening.

Tweetsie Railroad – Railroad Heritage Weekend

Celebrate the golden age of steam locomotives at the Tweetsie Railroad Heritage Weekend on August 24-25, 2024, in Blowing Rock, NC. Enjoy rides behind historic locomotives, including a special 1870s vintage No. 5 Coach Car for a $5 donation supporting railroad preservation projects. The weekend includes locomotive shop tours, a memorabilia room with historic artifacts, and an exclusive evening photo session on Saturday. All activities, except the special train ride, are included in the regular admission price.

A railroad photography charter featuring Kentucky & Tennessee Railway #12 (Southern #4501) will take place at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on September 9, 2024. This event celebrates the Southern Railway's 130th anniversary and the 60th anniversary of 4501's retirement from the K&T, showcasing the locomotive in its K&T #12 appearance. The charter runs from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, starting at East Chattanooga depot and includes multiple photo run-bys, antique props, time period actors, and lunch. Participants will have the chance to capture the recreated passenger train in action at various locations along the route.

Durango & Silverton – Fall Photo Special

The Durango & Silverton Fall Photography Special will take place from September 14-16 along the Animas River Canyon, featuring night shoots led by renowned photographer Pete Lerro. This event includes two nights of train photography, with a K-28 class locomotive pulling a specially arranged consist. Participants will enjoy professionally lit run-bys at iconic locations, with transportation provided between Durango and Silverton. White Pass & Yukon Railway – Rail Enthusiast Spectacular by Trains & Travel International

The White Pass & Yukon Railway will host three charter trains featuring steam and diesel locomotives on a 68-mile route between Skagway, Alaska, and Carcross, Yukon, after the cruise ship season in 2024. The charters will include steam locomotive No. 73, a 2-8-2 Baldwin built in 1947, a General Electric shovel nose diesel, and an Alco/Montreal low hood DL535. The trains will traverse the rugged terrain, offering photo run-bys along sheer rock cliffs, wooden trestles, and tunnels. This event marks the return of railfan charters to the White Pass & Yukon Railroad after a 20-year hiatus.

Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway – Photo Charter by Dynamo Productions

Vermont Rail System – Railfan Weekend by Trains Magazine

Enjoy a relaxing ride through the Vermont countryside on a chartered train, tentatively powered by Vermont Rail System Alco RS-1 No. 405. Virginia & Truckee Railroad – Railfan Spectacular by Trains & Travel International

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad will operate a charter photo passenger train on October 9, 2024. The train will be pulled by steam locomotive No. 18, a Baldwin 2-8-2 built in 1914, or by V&T No. 29 if No. 18 is unavailable. The day begins with boarding in Virginia City for a 16-mile journey to Eastgate Carson City Station, where the locomotive will take water and run around the train. The return trip to Virginia City will include approximately 15 photo stops and run-bys, ending with a workshop visit in Virginia City.

East Broad Top – Railfan Spectacular by Trains & Travel International

The East Broad Top Railfan Spectacular will take place on October 11, 2024. The event features locomotive No. 16, a Baldwin 2-8-2 built in 1916, pulling a train of coal hopper cars and coaches through the scenic Aughwick Valley. The morning will include multiple photo run-bys between Orbisonia (Rockhill Furnace) and Colgate Grove, followed by an afternoon workshop tour at Rockhill Furnace. Participants will also visit the Friends of the East Broad Top Museum, take a walking tour to the Robertsdale Coal Mine, try out a railbike, and ride the historic trolleys at the Rockhill Trolley Museum.

Durango & Silverton – Photo Charter by Trains Magazine

Lerro Photography and David Williams will host a two-day steam charter event at the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad on October 26-27, 2024. The charters will feature historic locomotives traversing scenic routes from Chama, NM, and Antonito, CO, with multiple photo runbys. On October 26, Rio Grande 2-8-2 K-27 #463 will pull a freight train from Chama to Osier and back, with K-36 #487 substituting if snow is present. On October 27, D&RG 4-6-0 #168 and D&RG 2-8-0 #315 will pull a mixed consist from Antonito to Osier and back. The event includes dawn-to-dusk photo opportunities.
